| Scotland will vote on independence in a referendum to be held 18 September 2014. For any resident of the UK this is a truely monumental decision, and regardless of the outcome will have major implications for generations to come. Not being Scottish myself means I have no vote, and whilst I don't wish to trivialise what is happening, I'm interested in this from a betting point of view (if you were expecting something else, maybe a site called Matched Betting Blog wasn't the right call by you!). |
There have been a number of debates, and certainly a lot of people weighing in with their thoughts on the matter (though there are still some major Scots that haven't made their voice heard, probably because of the reaction they tend to get from both sides), but what happens on the day is still anyone's guess........or is it?
As with most things, you can bet on Scotland to leave the Union, or inded bet on Scotland to keep the band together. The odds on Scotland voting Yes to secede from the United Kingdom are currently running at a best priced 14/5 with BetFair, whilst a vote of No is favourite at 3/10 on.
Bookmakers do sometimes get things wrong, particularly where there is a public vote or opinion involved. It is after all a lot easier to gage the chances of a group of horses or football teams than the opinions of millions of voters. However, in this instance, I think we'll find the bookmakers will be right. And for me, that means there's little value in the bet.
For what little my opinion is worth, I fancy this referendum is more about making a statement than actually wanting to get away. More of a power and ego trip for Alex Salmon than something the people have a genuine desire to go through with. That said, if Scotland as a nation decide to leave then the very best of luck to them, I'll still visit and give them some of my tourist ponds (or euros, or whatevers), it's a beautiful country full of lovely people.
