| Joy unbouded, there's another Royal baby on the way! The Duke and Duchess and Cambridge have announced they are expecting their second child. It's a couple of months since their first child, George, turned one and in a shameless attempt to keep the maternity and paternity leave coming they've got themselves pregnant again. You could be pro Royal or staunchly against then, it's at least anothe event to bet on........even if you really shouldn't as the odds are terrible. |
You could have a bet on the name of the child, but there are quite a few names they could choose from. Even removing some of the ones that definitely won't be in the running like Princess, Ruby, Jeff, Brian, Brooklyn, Moon, Apple and Fifi Trixibelle and there's really still to many to make the market suitable for betting.

The simplest thing to bet on is going to be the gender, you at least get a 50/50 chance with that. Or do you? Old wives tell tales, and those old wives tales tell us that if you've already had a boy you're more likely to have another one, but is it born out by the facts? Actually no. In general boys are slightly more likely for a first child at 51/49, but if the first child is a boy then the odds actually go to 50/50 on the second child. You're really guessing unless you happen to work in their hospital, in which case please provide the gender to me in a personal message so I can clean up!

Finally we have the question of multiple births. Could the Duke and Duchess end up with twins or even more? The bookmakers would have it that such an event is around 25/1, but in reality it's more like 64/1 for a UK birth to be twins or more. Not exactly a value bet.

That articles like this get more clicks and interest than learning how to matched bet and actually make money is a constant source of suprise to me, not sure what people are thinking, but these are not good bets.
