The Uefa Champions League is one of the biggest competitions in world football.
The biggest and best teams and players from the top European leagues fighting it out for the right to call themselves the best team in Europe. The list of winners is a who's who of great teams and styles of football that make the competition something of a dip stick for formations and tactics through the years. More than all that though, it's a brilliant compeition to bet on. Not only are there extra mid-week games, there's extra offers, especially on the British teams...........whilst they remain in the competition anyway. |
The 2013/14 Champions League final was contested by Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid, with Real eventually overcoming their local rivals (and La Liga Winners) to lift the cup.
This season we're expecting more of the same in that the Spanish teams are still very strong and there will be old favourites a plenty in the latter stages.
One of the key factors in how successful the Champions League will be from a betting (and specifically matched betting and advantage play) point of view, is the durability of the English teams. More English teams in the compeition means more liquidity in the markets, and more of the UK based bookmakers fighting for our hard earned money.
From that point of view the Champions League draw was a bit hit and miss. Chelsea should sail through their group, and Arsenal will fancy their chances as well, but Manchester City and Liverpool have sterner tests ahead.
Those sterner tests involve, from a Premier League fan point of view, the ties of the round in the form of Liverpool vs Real Madrid. Liverpool have been out of the Champions League for 5 years now, and it certainly feels time to welcome them back in, if only to see someone different in the competition.
In terms of the odds; Chelsea lead the English pack at odds of 15/2 with Unibet, followed by Manchester City at 14/1 with Bet365, Arsenal at 25/1 with BetFred and finally Liverpool at 28/1 with Coral.
It's a steap drop from Chelsea to the rest of the pack in fact, and there's only Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid at shorter odds. This is both a reflection of Chelsea's strength, and also their liklihood of escaping a relatively simple group. Certainly compared to Barcelona who find themselves in the "Group of Death" along with PSG and Ajaz......and another team that haven't got a chance.
For betting purposes the Champions League offers an incredible selection of bets, but the money is to be made on the regular if bets and moneyback specials covering double delight and hat-trick heaven, red cards, nil nil bore draws, injury time winners and so on.
It's not the best event to create a book for as there aren't many boosts on teams to win the overall competition compared to those for individual games, so stick to the simple bets and remember that bookmakers love accumulators, so you shouldn't! At the very least you might as well have a risk free bet on it.
